A good duvet won’t suddenly give you the energy of a top athlete in the morning. However, thanks to a good duvet, you can sleep through the night undisturbed and wake up fresh and revitalized the next morning. A good duvet prevents you from waking up drenched in sweat or not being able to sleep at all. The enormous range of duvets available is enough to keep anyone awake. No worries: in this article, you will discover how to find the best duvet so you can sleep wonderfully.

What makes a duvet a good duvet?
Why are these the best duvets? A good duvet:
Retains your body heat,
but is not too warm.
Wicks away moisture
and breathes sufficiently.
Is light and supple, allowing
you to move easily.
Is made of high-quality materials,
such as down and cotton.
The properties mentioned above are influenced by the following duvet specifications:
- The duvet filling: largely determines moisture regulation, temperature regulation, and the degree of insulation. For example, a down duvet insulates two to three times better than a feather duvet. As a result, a down duvet is also two to three times lighter. The quality of the filling can be expressed in fill power in mm.
- The duvet cover (ticking): a finely woven ticking makes a duvet suppler and up to 50% lighter. The material of the ticking also determines how well it breathes. A good ticking gives you a true five-star feeling. Ticking quality is usually expressed in NM.
- The method of construction: after filling a duvet, it is stitched. This can be done with a box stitch (carré) or baffle box (cassette) stitching. The stitching and the number of compartments determine the extent to which the down can shift and gain volume.
This top 9 has been carefully compiled based on the three specifications above and feedback from more than 16,451 customers.
The top 9 is therefore based on those three specifications. Later in the article, we explain the impact of each component on quality. Besides quality, it is important to choose a duvet size and heat class that suits you. You can read more about this on the duvet advice page.

Product Review
The top model from the German brand Kauffmann gives you a luxurious five-star feeling. The duvet is light as a cloud, soft as silk, and offers the warmth of a freshly filled bath.
The interior consists of 100% high-quality German goose down. This goose down retains body heat effectively, meaning relatively little down is needed to create pleasant warmth. For the smallest duvet size, the fill weight is only 380 grams. That is three times lighter than a comparable wool duvet, yet the duvet looks very fluffy and voluminous.
The German goose down allows moisture to pass through well, making the duvet feel pleasant even when it’s slightly warmer. This allows you to sleep through the night and wake up rested. This duvet is particularly suitable if you have a well-insulated bedroom or if you tend to get warm quickly.
The cover, or ticking, is made of long Egyptian cotton threads and offers the best quality in our collection. Due to this outstanding quality, the duvet has high ‘drapeability’. It falls suppler around your body, ensuring you never get cold. The down is responsibly sourced; ducks and geese live in good conditions and are not live-plucked. This duvet easily lasts 10 years.
Recommended for you if:
– you have a well-insulated bedroom;
– you want nothing but the best.
2. Best Buy

- A sustainable natural product with a 5-year warranty. The duvet is checked by Downpass for animal welfare and quality.
- If you get warm easily or have a well-insulated bedroom, this duvet may be less suitable for you.
Product Review
This duvet doesn’t come from Twente, but from Ermelo. However, it was conceived by a ‘Tukker’ (someone from Twente). Tukkers are often described as down-to-earth. The designer’s goal was to create an ‘onmeunig goed’ (exceptionally good) duvet without unnecessary fuss. They succeeded!
The soft Tukker duvet is twice as light as a synthetic duvet thanks to the 90% goose down and 10% goose feather filling, allowing you to move easily in bed. The cotton ticking and down filling allow moisture to pass through effectively, so the duvet never feels clammy. It retains body heat well and provides pleasant warmth. This is great, as you won’t wake up from the cold and can sleep undisturbed.
This is an ‘all-year’ duvet, meaning you can use it throughout the year. However, extreme temperature differences in summer or winter may feel warm or cold.
This duvet is produced in the Netherlands. Because production is local and no money is invested in TV commercials or showrooms, you pay a relatively low price for this high-quality goose down duvet. It hasn’t earned the ‘Best Buy’ label for nothing.
Recommended for you if:
– you prefer sleeping under the same duvet all year round;
– you are looking for the best price-quality ratio.
Best Duvet According to the Consumers’ Association (2019)

Product Review
Many consumers base their choice on reviews from others and consumer tests. Want to know which down duvet the Consumers’ Association recommends?
The Excellent DUO duvet by Vandyck was named ‘Best Down Duvet’ by the Consumers’ Association in 2019.
How did they make this choice?
The Consumers’ Association evaluates a duvet based on a combination of three properties:
- Insulation value: indicates how quickly a duvet warms up and stays warm.
- Moisture permeability: indicates how effectively the duvet wicks away (perspiration) moisture.
- Weight in m2: indicates how heavy the duvet is, affecting how much you feel it and how easily you can move in bed.
Down is the ideal filling material for duvets, as it best combines these three quality properties.
In total, the Consumers’ Association tested eight down duvets from various brands.
The Vandyck Excellent DUO duvet came out on top with a score of 7.7 in the category of down four-season duvets. This differs from the Vandyck Superior duvet in our top 10 because the Consumers’ Association also includes price as a weighting factor, whereas we did not for the best four-season duvet.
4. Best Price-Quality Ratio

Pros and Cons
- Retains body heat well thanks to the 90% duck down and 10% duck feather filling. The down has a fill power of 170.
- Up to 40% lighter than a feather duvet due to the high-quality filling and cotton ticking. The ticking has an NM value of 70.
- Good moisture permeability thanks to the down filling and cotton ticking.
- A sustainable natural product with a 5-year warranty. The duvet is checked by Downpass for animal welfare and quality.
- Difficult to wash at home.
Product Review
The Duck Down Prestige duvet keeps you warm all year round, is relatively light, and comes at an attractive price. On a scale of 1 to 10, the duvet receives an average rating of 9.4.
This 4-season duvet consists of two parts, allowing you to adjust the thickness by adding or removing a layer.
The filling consists of 90% duck down and 10% duck feathers. Down insulates well, resulting in a fill weight 40% lower than a feather duvet offering similar warmth. Because the duvet is so light, you can move easily in bed and wake up less often.
The quality of this Dutch duck down is comparable to European goose down. Thanks to high-quality filling, it absorbs moisture easily and ventilates well. Finished with a 100% cotton ticking. Due to the very dense weave, dust mites cannot enter this duvet. If you are looking for an affordable, anti-allergic duvet, the Prestige is an excellent choice.
Recommended for you if:
– you want a high-quality 4-season duvet at a great price;
– you don’t get warm very quickly.

The duvet consists of two parts. By using these separately or together, you have the ideal duvet year-round. It stays cool in spring and summer and cozy in autumn and winter.
The fill weight is relatively low, making movement in bed easy.
The winter version is baffle box stitched (cassette), meaning it consists of compartments with upright internal walls. This keeps the down evenly distributed and prevents cold spots.
Thanks to high-quality filling with a fill power of 180, it absorbs moisture well and offers excellent ventilation.
Only high-quality materials were used for this duvet. It’s no surprise that the Consumers’ Association also rates this duvet very highly.

– you want a cool, light summer duvet.
3 Aspects that Determine Duvet Quality
Duvet quality is determined by three features: filling, ticking, and construction. Since weight is a result of ticking and filling quality, we leave it as a separate property.
1. The Duvet Filling
The filling determines your nightly comfort. Down feels like a five-star hotel, while synthetic can feel like you’re sweating like an otter. Down has the highest score for filling, followed by wool and cotton. Down has a HIGG index impact of 19 (lower is better), compared to polyester (28) and wool (71). Down is the best filling, though you pay for that quality.

Down Duvets
A down duvet must contain at least 60% down. There is a difference between goose and duck down.
Advantages:
- Good moisture regulation
- Retains warmth well
- Feels soft
- Low environmental impact
- Durable; lasts 3x longer than synthetic.
Disadvantages:
- Hard to wash at home
- Animal welfare varies (check for RDS/DownPass labels).

Feather Duvet
Do not confuse feathers with down. Feathers are up to 3x heavier, though they are cool and cheaper.
Advantages:
- Good ventilation.
- Durable and natural.
- Relatively cheap.
Disadvantages:
- Much heavier than down.
- Hard to wash at home.
- Quills can prick through ticking.

Wool
Wool absorbs moisture well and feels soft, but is very heavy and warm, making it less suitable for summer.
Advantages:
- Excellent heat retention
- Better moisture absorption than down
- Natural and durable.
- More animal-friendly than down.
- Often too warm in summer
- Feels heavy
- Not easily washable
- Higher environmental impact than down

Synthetic Duvet
Often chosen for its low price and ease of washing.
Advantages:
- Cheap.
- Easy to wash at home.
- Can feel sweaty.
- Poorer heat retention.
- Twice as heavy as down.
- Only lasts a few years.

Cotton Duvet
Ideal for summer: cool, breathable, and affordable. Less suitable for the rest of the year.
Advantages:
- Plant-based.
- Cheaper than wool/down.
- Washable.
Disadvantages:
- Excellent ventilation (too much for winter)
- Poor heat retention.

Filling Quality
Down quality is expressed in fill power. Higher fill power means better insulation with less material, resulting in a lighter duvet.

Measured using a Lorch cylinder (30g). Higher lift means better insulation, purity, cluster size, and durability.

2. The Duvet Ticking
The ticking is the casing. It determines how well the duvet drapes. Finer ticking is lighter and prevents dust mites.

3. Construction Method
Box Stitch (Carré)
Layers are stitched directly together. This can create cold spots at the stitching line.

Baffle Box (Cassette)
Features internal walls (baffles) to prevent cold spots and allow down to loft.

Frequently Asked Questions
You absolutely don’t want to sleep under a duvet filled with irresponsible down. You’ve likely seen media stories about ‘live-plucking’. You can sleep worry-free by checking for the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) or Downpass labels. These independent bodies audit the entire chain for living conditions and quality.
