Pillows for side sleepers
Of all the different sleeping positions, side sleeping creates the greatest gap between the head and mattress. Side sleepers should opt for a deep and firm pillow to provide sufficient support for both head and neck. And the best pillow for you, as a side sleeper, depends on your weight and build. Be sure to pick a pillow that corresponds with your body size.

Pillows for belly sleepers
Belly sleepers don’t always use a pillow but this can mean less comfort. It’s very important that the neck is not flexed upwards. A pillow containing at least 60% down in combination with a maximum fill weight of 600 gram is recommended.
The right materials
Most of us rest our heads on pillows for more than 7 hours a night. That’s about 2,555 hours every year. A high-quality pillow helps you fall asleep and stay asleep. That low-cost option at your local supermarket isn’t worth it’s fill weight. A good pillow supports the neck and head, feels soft and comfortable, absorbs moisture, keeps the head cool, and lasts a long time.
Soft and fluffy filling
Down is tantalisingly soft, supple and voluminous, and synonymous with 5-star sleep. The higher the percentage of down in a pillow, the softer it is. Feathers are often added to down pillows to provide firmer support. Duck down used in Downpillow.com products is of extremely high quality. So high, it’s comparable to European goose down. Soft pillows are the best option for belly sleepers or small to average build individuals.
Support
Down might be incredibly soft but it doesn’t provide much support, a bit like wool. Feathers, on the other hand, are firmer. Do you suffer from neck, back or shoulder issues? If you do, it’s even more important to choose a pillow that supports the spine. Consider a natural latex pillow. (Natural) latex keeps its shape, meaning plenty of support for the head and neck, and a better night’s sleep.
Heat- and moisture-regulating pillows
To stop a pillow becoming saturated with sweat, the ticking and filling must be absorbent. To release absorbed moisture, the pillow also needs good air circulation. Air circulation also keeps the head cool. Wool is by far the best material in terms of absorbency and ventilation but doesn’t feel anywhere near as soft and luxurious as down. Feathers are top for air circulation but less absorbent. Down works in the opposite way. Other natural materials such as kapok, Tencel and cotton are also good choices for heat and moisture regulation. Synthetic materials like memory foam do not perform anywhere near as well as natural ones.
Sustainable and responsible pillows
A down pillow will last for 5 to 10 years. That’s three times longer than any synthetic pillow. A used down pillow can also be recycled, so its environmental impact (according to the HIGG index) is low – up to half the score of wool. We only use ethical-sourced down in our pillows; these are traced and quality tested through Downpass. This is something to shout about, as non-Downpass certified products might contain untested materials or use down and feathers collected from inhumane live-plucking methods.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, but always check the care label. Even so, we advise you not to wash it yourself. A down pillow must be allowed to dry completely after washing and needs to spend a long time in the tumble dryer. If not completely dry, the pillow will start to smell – that terrible odour is practically impossible to get rid of. It’s best to take your down pillow or duvet to the dry cleaner’s. Keep your pillow fresh with a removable pillow protector and wash that every week. It’s also important to let your pillow air in front of an open window once a week.
Definitely. Our down pillows are covered with a dense-weave fabric that dust mites can’t get through, no matter how hard they try. Many of the products we offer have passed tests developed by the German institute, NOMITE. These feature a NOMITE label (visible on a side seam).
Generally speaking, goose down has more volume and a better insulative capacity than duck down. However, Dutch duck down is very similar to European goose down. We can say with pride that Dutch duck down is comparable to the highest quality goose down. Both duck and goose down are meltingly soft, highly absorbent, and very long-lasting.
