Down allergy is actually a house dust mite allergy
.Any Finnish research shows that an allergy to feathers and down is very rare. Out of 269 subjects, only 1 person was found to be allergic to feathers. The study shows that people who appear to be allergic to feathers are actually allergic to dust mites.
What is a house dust mite allergy?
House dust mites are small critters that belong to the spider family. They like to nest in dark places where dander from people or animals can be found. Hence, the house dust mite likes to settle in or on a mattress/head pillow, but also the carpet and curtains are a popular environment for the creature. However, due to their small size (0.3 mm) they are not or hardly visible. The feces and molt skins of the animal remain behind. These are basically harmless, but may cause unpleasant reactions for allergy sufferers.

- Sleeping poorly
- Headaches
- Sneeing or other complaints in the mucous membranes of the nose
- Tranching or itching eyes
- Other complaints in the lungs

Prevent dust mites
In addition to the suitable down pillow, bolsters for the mattress, comforter and pillow are also important. These should also be dust mite proof and washable at 60 degrees. We also have the following tips:
- Look for a laminate or parquet floor instead of carpeting
- Don’t choose an upholstered box spring, choose a wooden bed
- Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter
- Have good ventilation and a low level of humidity in the house
- Wash all your bedding regularly at a minimum of 60 degrees
- Dry your bedding and other laundry preferably in the dryer or outside
