Do you feel that your comforter is dirty? Then no doubt you want to wash it. However, washing a down comforter is less necessary than most people think. If you use a comforter cover, washing it once every 3 to 5 years is sufficient. Otherwise, it is wise to wash the comforter every 2 years. You have two options, namely your comforter:

- Wash it yourself
Let the dry cleaner wash a down duvet

A dry cleaner has large special washing machines in which your comforter is professionally washed and dried. Often a laundry also has a special down program. The price depends on the size of the comforter.

Washing a quilt at home or at the gas station: 6 washing tips
Don’t worry, washing a down comforter is not difficult. Don’t underestimate it, though. It’s not jeans you’re going to wash. If you don’t dare or the comforter is too big for your washing machine, try one of Revolution Laundry’s large washing machines. You can find these washing machines at some gas stations (all laundry locations), among other places. The following 5 tips will ensure a good wash result:
- Wash the comforter at a low or high temperature. Low temperature is recommended as the comforter’s fabric can shrink up to 8% in hot water.
- Use as high a speed as possible so the comforter dries faster and easier.
- Use gentle detergent (such as this) with no additives so the comforter stays beautiful. Add less detergent than you normally would, this will prevent a stiffened comforter.
- Let the washing machine run the rinse cycle twice.
- Do not use chlorine or bleach.
- Do not use fabric softener.
Check the comforter for soap residue after the wash program. Should the comforter still contain soap, then it is a good idea to run the entire washing programme again, only without detergent. This prevents “clumps of down”.
After washing, the comforter may smell a little. Don’t worry, after the comforter has dried properly this smell goes away.
Drying your own comforter: 8 drying tips
.After washing your down comforter, it is very important to dry it properly. Otherwise, it can start to smell. Here’s how to make sure your comforter dries properly:
- Use a low to medium temperature drying cycle.
- Be patient and use a long drying time.
- Use 2 or 3 tennis balls to speed up the drying time.
- Take the comforter out of the dryer every half hour and pat it gently so that the down is evenly distributed throughout the comforter.
- After the drying cycle, do you still feel lumps or does the comforter still smell?
- Use dryer sheets for a softer and fresher result.
- Don’t dry the comforter on a clothesline or anywhere else it might get clumps or wet.
- Don’t use an iron.
How often should you wash a down comforter?
Prevention is better than cure. You should always use a duvet cover and wash it regularly. Even then, however, you can’t avoid washing your comforter. Wash the comforter every 3 to 5 years.
During sleep, you lose up to 2dl of moisture per night. Some of this is absorbed by your comforter. It is important that this moisture leaves the comforter again. You do this by patting your comforter daily and airing it by the window every now and then.
