A good down comforter has a relatively long lifespan compared to a synthetic or cotton comforter. After reading this article, you’ll know if your comforter needs replacing by one simple trick. You’ll also discover how to keep your comforter in top condition so you can enjoy a warm and airy comforter for years to come.
On average, a down duvet will last between 10 – 15 years. The following 4 things affect the life of your fluffy comforter:
- The level of maintenance.
Punch up your comforter every day. Preferably from the side so that the down does not slide out of the compartments. Air the comforter regularly and do not wash it more often than once every 2 – 3 years. This will ensure a longer life for your comforter. - How often you lie on the duvet.
Lying on the comforter compresses the down in the comforter. You can thereby break the down cluster. The down cluster then has a smaller volume and does not insulate your heat as well. The more often or longer you lie on the comforter instead of under it, the shorter the comforter will last. - The more restless you sleep.
The more you move around during your sleep the shorter the life of your comforter becomes. Especially around the “shoulder area” as that is where the most friction occurs. - The quality of the duvet.
Both the filling power of the filling and the NM value of the ticking affect the quality of a down comforter and its lifespan. The higher these values are, the higher the quality of the comforter is. A comforter with a minimum fill power of 150 (mm / 30 grams) and a NM value of 70 is recommended.
Down comforters with a long lifespan
The fill power of down is a measure of the quality of a comforter’s filling. A larger down flock holds more air than a smaller down flock and therefore insulates better. A larger down flock has a higher fill power.
A cheap comforter often contains many feathers or down with a low fill power. The comforter will therefore quickly lose its insulating power. Therefore, invest in a quality comforter with a minimum fill power of 150 (mm / 30 grams).

The “transparent” trick reveals in one minute whether you need a new comforter. This method works with any comforter. With the following four steps you know if it’s time for an (online) shopping visit:
- Take your comforter out of its cover and hold it close to a window.
- Look mainly at the compartments around the spot where your shoulders are normally under.
- The comforter in the picture lets some light through in some parts, but for the most part the comforter blocks out light. A good sign, this comforter will last for years to come.
- If a lot of light is getting through the down comforter, it’s time to replace it
